The Middle East in the Trump era?

Join us in Sydney on Wednesday, 20 November, as we welcome John Spencer, an award-winning scholar, author, combat veteran and military analyst, for a conversation on the topic of Middle East in the Trump era. This event will be moderated by Centre for Independent Studies Executive Director, Tom Switzer.

The Middle East in the Trump era?

With Donald Trump back in the White House, what will US policy towards Israel and the Middle East look like? To what extent will he distinguish his foreign policy in the region from neo-conservatives and liberal interventionists? With Hamas under siege, what are the potential paths forward for Gaza and the broader Middle East? What makes Israel’s operations against Hamas and Hezbollah so distinct? And as Israel faces challenges unlike any the West has seen, what lessons are emerging about the future of warfare for law-abiding militaries around the world?

John Spencer serves as chair of Urban Warfare Studies at the Modern War Institute at West Point and chair of Urban Warfare Studies with the Madison Policy Forum, a New York based think-tank. He is author of, among other books, Connected Soldiers: Life, Leadership and Social Connections in Modern War.

Tom Switzer is executive director of the Centre for Independent Studies.
