Gala Dinner: Global depopulation

Annual Gala Dinner

What could plunging birth rates mean for Australia?

If this is a question that interests you, don’t miss this year’s Gala Dinner at the Centre for Independent Studies. For the first time since the bubonic plague decimated Europe, the world’s population is decreasing. As a result of plummeting birth rates, more and more societies fall into an era of ongoing and unending depopulation.

East Asia’s Aging Population

East Asia, for instance, will have more people over 80 than children under 15 by 2050. As their work aged populations decline, China, Japan and South Korea will undoubtedly find it harder to generate economic growth. People will struggle to build wealth. There won’t be enough workers to fund their safety nets and our young people to fight in wars. Consequently, the long-heralded China-led “Asian Century” may never arrive.

Global Implications of Low Birth Rates

Thus, we have entered world of shrinking and aging societies. How worried should we be? Should governments encourage higher birth rates? Moreover, can our leaders and policymakers respond effectively? Also, should they?

Nicholas Eberstadt will answer these questions and more at our Annual Gala Dinner. Join us for a thought-provoking evening.

Who is Nicholas Eberstadt?

Our speaker, Nicholas Eberstadt, is a well-known scholar and political economist. Because of his deep understanding of demographics, development, and international affairs, few could speak as authoritatively on the depopulation facing our planet.  Further, he holds the Henry Wendt Chair in Political Economy at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI). At AEI, he researches global health, poverty, foreign aid, population changes, and more.

He is also the author of “The End of North Korea” (AEI Press, 1999), “Russia’s Peacetime Demographic Crisis” (NBR, 2010) and “Men Without Work: America’s Invisible Crisis” (Templeton Press, 2016). Finally, his latest book is “Men Without Work: Post-Pandemic Edition” (Templeton Press, 2022).

Previous Gala Dinners

The John Bonython Lecture series began in 1984 to honour the founding Chairman of the Board of Trustees. Without reservation, we can say the series has a tremendous impact. We have fostered debate and injected new ideas into the public discourse.  CIS supporters, members and friends all gather together each year furthering our commitment to the core principles of Classical Liberalism.
