The John Bonython Lecture series began in 1984 to honour the founding Chairman of the Board of Trustees. Without reservation, we can say the series has a tremendous impact. We have fostered debate and injected new ideas into the public discourse. CIS supporters, members and friends all gather together each year furthering our commitment to the core principles of Classical Liberalism.
Join us in Sydney on Wednesday, 4 September for an event featuring our 2024 John Bonython Lecturer, Nicholas Eberstadt. Nicholas will be joined by CIS Executive Director, Tom Switzer for a discussion on the shrinking human population and its implications for societies, the global economy, and power dynamics.
For the first time since the Black Death in the 1300s, the planetary population will decline. With birth rates plummeting, more and more societies are heading into an era of pervasive and indefinite depopulation. What lies ahead is a world of shrinking and aging societies everywhere.
Depopulation will transform the human world profoundly in numerous ways we have not begun to consider and may not yet be in a position to understand. It will recast society, economy and power politics. How should political leaders and policymakers respond to the era of depopulation?
Nicholas Eberstadt, one of the world’s leading demographic experts, holds the Henry Wendt Chair in Political Economy at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington. His latest book is Men Without Work: Post-Pandemic Edition (Templeton Press, 2022).
Tom Switzer is the Executive Director at the Centre for Independent Studies, and formerly hosted Between the Lines on the ABC’s Radio National.
