Home ownership is NSW Labor’s great middle-class goal

Join us in Sydney on Wednesday, 21 August at the Centre for Independent Studies, for a lunch event as we welcome NSW Treasurer Daniel Mookhey for a conversation on housing affordability in NSW and the state of the NSW economy. This event will be moderated by CIS Research Director, Simon Cowan.

Lunch will be provided.

Home ownership is becoming more of a dream than a reality for many aspiring first home buyers in Sydney. Given the huge population growth in the city’s west in recent decades, should wealthier suburbs in Sydney’s east and on the north shore contribute more to the housing supply? What policies will the NSW Government implement to reduce home prices in Australia’s most expensive property state?

Daniel Mookhey is an Australian politician and the current Treasurer of New South Wales. A member of the Labor Party, he has served in the New South Wales Legislative Council since 6 May 2015. Mookhey was appointed Shadow Treasurer in 2021 and, following Labor’s victory in the 2023 state election, became Treasurer and Minister for the Gig Economy

Simon Cowan is Research Director at CIS. He is a leading commentator on policy and politics, with a regular column in the Canberra Times newspaper and his latest work includes Attitudes to a post-Covid Australia and Millennials and Super: the case for voluntary superannuation.
