Redouble, or rethink? What to do about the energy transition

Join us on Thursday, 13 June in Melbourne as we welcome Alan Finkel, former Chief Scientist of Australia, and Aidan Morrison Director of Energy at the Centre for Independent Studies for a dialogue on the energy transition, tackling the question of whether the current efforts should be redoubled, or whether a rethink is required.

Australia stands at a fork in the road. The current plan to transition to a system dominated by wind and solar is encountering headwinds, with infrastructure investments facing unexpected social, economic, and environmental challenges. Are we still on the optimal path to net-zero? Are we on a viable one?

Alan Finkel was Australia’s Chief Scientist from 2016 to 2020. He is a neuroscientist, engineer, and entrepreneur. He led the 2017 National Electricity Market Review and the 2019 development of the National Hydrogen Strategy and chaired the 2020 panel developing the Low Emissions Technology Roadmap. He is currently special adviser to the Australian government on low-emissions technologies.

Aidan Morrison is Director of Energy Research at the Centre for Independent Studies. Aidan is an accomplished data-scientist, analyst, and entrepreneur. He’s maintained a long-standing interest in energy and defence technologies, including nuclear power and naval propulsion systems.
