BNE | Trump vs Harris: An overview of the US Presidential election!

Join us in Brisbane on Monday, 28 October, for an exclusive panel discussion on the 2024 US election, featuring renowned American political commentator John B. Judis. John will be joined by University of Queensland scholars Sarah Percy and James Allan, with the discussion moderated by CIS Executive Director Tom Switzer.

The US is bitterly divided and frighteningly polarised. Public confidence in virtually every major American institution — from religion and the courts to media and the military — has fallen. At the same time, the US is a trendsetter in energy, technology, artificial intelligence and biotechnology. It remains militarily the world’s most powerful nation (though China is catching up).

Who is likely to win on November 5? What are the strengths and weaknesses of Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, and their running mates? How will Democrats or Republicans govern the US when it is more divided than it has been since the late 1960s? What is the likely trajectory for American foreign policy?

John B. Judis has been a leading Washington-based commentator on American politics for the past half century. He has worked as a senior writer at the National Journal and for many years as a senior editor at The New Republic. His books include The Politics of Our Time, The Populist Explosion, Genesis: Truman, American Jews, and the Origins of the Arab-Israeli Conflict, The Folly of Empire, The Paradox of American Democracy, and William F. Buckley Jr: Patron Saint of the Conservatives.

Sarah Percy is associate professor of political science and international studies at the University of Queensland.

James Allan is professor of law at the University of Queensland and a regular contributor to Spectator Australia.
