Stephen is an Adjunct Professor in the School of Mechanical and Mining Engineering at UQ, provides advisory services through Cape Otway Associates, and is a director of an energy technology startup. He is an energy economist with 30 years’ experience on assignments in over 30 countries. During that time, he has been involved in most parts of the wider energy sector along the value chain from primary energy to end users, in electricity, gas and the transport sector.
Over 20 years of his experience is in consulting, providing commercial and policy advice, drawing on economic analysis and strategy in energy and resources for financial, corporate and government clients. Stephen spent five years leading energy industry and market analysis for a large corporation.
For the past four years he has been involved in academia, in research and teaching. Stephen is now continuing his involvement in research supervision on a part-time basis, while his main focus now is on advisory work, including commercialisation of new technology and startup ventures.
Stephen is also an engineer with over 30 years’ experience, working on projects in over 30 countries in the economics and dynamics of energy systems and electricity and resources markets. Stephen is the lead author of the report on the study What would be required for nuclear energy plants to be operating in Australia from the 2030s, published by UQ in 2021, and has recently supervised research modelling the total system costs of decarbonising Australia’s electricity either with or without nuclear energy.
